Research Associate (Ph. D) - Full Time

The Institute of Nuclear Physics currently comprises 15 working groups with about 280 people working in the fields of

theoretical and experimental nuclear structure physics, nuclear astrophysics as well as laser and plasma physics. It is thus

one of the largest of its kind in the world and enjoys a high international reputation.

The holder of the position will be expected to set up and then supervise a laboratory for the development and manufacture

of detector systems and targets at the Institute and, in addition, to support the work in the field of research on radioactive

nuclei and antiprotons carried out at GSI/FAIR, CERN and RIKEN in a decisive and leading manner. The activity also

includes the scientific supervision of doctoral candidates and students during their final theses in the mentioned fields of

work as well as the assumption of general organizational tasks in the area of the responsibilities of the working group.

In addition to a doctorate in the field of nuclear or particle physics with a grade of at least A the candidate must have

worked as a postdoc for at least two years with outstanding scientific results. Experience with experiments on the physics of

radioactive beams or on antiprotons is expected as well as profound knowledge and experience in the field of specification,

development and commissioning of modern detector systems for nuclear and particle physics basic research, especially in

the field of electronics and data acquisition as well as programming, especially in C++. Knowledge and experience with

different materials, e. g. semiconductors and gases, as well as in the fields of ion traps and vacuum technology are

desirable. In addition, a high sense of responsibility as well as a pronounced ability for project coordination and teamwork

are necessary. Knowledge and experience in teaching and supervision of scientific theses are also desirable.
