Laboratory Engineer
Our naturally beautiful campus in the Jyväskylä city centre is home to a dynamic multidisciplinary research university – a modern, open and collaborative community of 2,500 experts and 15,000 students seeking answers to the pivotal questions of today and tomorrow. It was here, in 1863, that Finnish-language teacher education began. Since then, the University of Jyväskylä has been serving the future. The dialogue between research, education and society is our driving force. We cherish this balance of research and education, and work to promote open thinking. We kindle the skills, knowledge and passion to live wisely for the best of humanity.
The Department of Physics is currently seeking to recruit staff to the position of
Laboratory Engineer, as of 1st April, 2019, or as soon as possible thereafter in effect until further notice.
The main areas of research of the Department of Physics are nuclear and accelerator-based physics, particle physics and materials physics. The research areas in nuclear and accelerator-based physics are nuclear structure, especially the physics of exotic nuclei, nuclear models, double beta decay, ion source physics and applied accelerator-based research. The research areas in particle physics are ultrarelativistic heavy ion collision physics, neutrino physics and particle cosmology. The research areas in materials physics are nanophysics and nanotechnology, complex materials physics, low temperature physics and computational materials physics. Experimental research at the Department is conducted in the Accelerator Laboratory and Tomography Laboratory, and at the Nanoscience Center (NSC) operated by the Faculty, as well as in foreign research centres such as CERN and GSI, Darmstadt
The Accelerator Laboratory currently hosts four accelerators: a K130 heavy-ion cyclotron, a K30 light-ion cyclotron, a 1.7MV Pelletron and an electron LINAC. The accelerators are served by a large number of ion sources. The laboratory hosts several research groups focused on fundamental investigations of the properties of the atomic nucleus, along with applications of accelerator-based physics and commercial services.
The laboratory engineer currently being sought will play an important and broad role in supporting the work of the various research teams and in particular the technical work of the accelerator and ion-source groups. The candidate will be expected to produce irradiation targets for the experimental groups, to assist in the development and preparation of ion beams and other tasks together with the technical group of the Accelerator Laboratory required for day-to-day operations of the facility. The candidate will be expected to actively seek out new methods of target and ion beam production. The candidate should have a willingness to travel and possibly spend some time abroad at collaborating institutes for exchange of expertise.
The candidate should have a relevant technical or scientific qualification (engineer, diploma-engineer, M.Sc.) and preferably experience of working with radioactive sources or in radiation controlled areas. A background in chemistry or radiochemistry may also be viewed favourably in filling this position. In order to successfully carry out the required tasks you will use your initiative, organizational skills and interactive and co-operative skills in a multi-cultural environment. The position also requires proficiency in both oral and written English.
The job-specific salary component of a Laboratory engineer is based on the job demands level 8 (2510,94 €/month) according to the salary system concerning assisting staff at universities. In addition, a personal performance-based salary component amounting to the maximum of 46.3% of the job-specific salary component is also paid.
A trial period of six months will be used when the position is first filled.
Upon the consent of the applicant, a background check can be made on the person to be appointed (Security Clearance Act 726/2014). For more information on the background check and the rights of the subject of the check, see www.supo.fi.
