Assistant Professor Position Experimental Nuclear Physics

The Florida State University (FSU) Physics Department invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in experimental nuclear physics, with an emphasis on the structure and reactions of exotic nuclei. The successful applicant is expected to develop an original research program at the local accelerator and at national facilities, in particular at the upcoming FRIB facility.

The position provides excellent opportunities to pursue research at the local John D. Fox accelerator laboratory with multiple research instruments, including a digital Compton-suppressed Gamma-detection Germanium array, the new high-acceptance magnetic Spectrograph and the RESOLUT in-flight exotic beam facility. The laboratory focuses on developing innovative experimental techniques and devices such as the ANASEN and ENCORE active-target systems, and modern neutron-detector techniques, which lead to forefront research opportunities at the national laboratories as well. We are seeking candidates who can strengthen and complement the existing capabilities of the research group and also strengthen ties to other programs in the department, including the theoretical nuclear physics and astrophysics. The FSU physics department has excellent programs in nuclear physics, particle physics, condensed matter physics, and astrophysics, with currently 44 tenured or tenure-track faculty and over 150 graduate students. The successful candidate must hold a Ph.D. degree in physics (or equivalent), and at least 2 years postdoctoral research experience is expected. Demonstrated potential for excellence in teaching and mentoring a diverse undergraduate and graduate student body, while establishing a well-recognized research program, is essential.
