Research Associate, Nuclear Physics Group
A fixed term postdoctoral appointment is available in the Nuclear Physics Group, part of the Department of Physics, to work in the group of Dr Marina Petri and Dr Stefanos Paschalis on experimental investigations of neutron-rich nuclei. This research activity concentrates on the measurement of key experimental observables that are used to constrain state-of-the-art nuclear theory models. "Can we understand nuclei based on the underlying fundamental interactions?", "What is the role of 3-body forces?" and "How do nucleon-nucleon correlations deplete the single-particle strength in atomic nuclei?" are the overarching questions of our experimental programme.
To address these questions, we are performing experiments at leading facilities world-wide. The experiments span from low-energy Coulomb excitation to high-energy quasi-free scattering reactions, using diverse experimental apparatuses. The experiments of the group are performed using the R3B setup at GSI, the SAMURAI setup at RIBF/RIKEN, the S800 spectrometer at NSCL as well as setups at ANL and JYFL. The experiments employ state-of-art gamma-ray spectrometers (GRETA/AGATA), particle tracking arrays (L3T Si tracker) and large acceptance or high-resolution magnetic spectrometers. Our group is also contributing to the characterisation of these instruments and the preparation of the next generation experiments.
We are looking for a highly motivated person to join our team. As a postdoctoral researcher in our group, you will oversee the conduction of the planned experiments, you will lead on the data analysis and data interpretation and also propose new experiments. Good teamworking skills are essential and a strong experience on data analysis and simulations is desirable. You are also expected to have a good overall understanding of setting up and planning nuclear physics experiments. You will have plenty of opportunities for traveling both to support the experiments and to join international meetings and conferences to present your results and represent the group.
You are expected to have a PhD in Experimental Nuclear Physics or equivalent experience.
The post is fixed-term for an initial period of 24 months, and will be available from 1 March 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter.
Informal enquiries may be made to Dr Marina Petri (marina.petri@york.ac.uk).
