Postdoctoral Position in Experimental Nuclear Astrophysics
The Nuclear Physics group at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (Israel) has an opening for a postdoctoral research fellow in the field of Experimental Nuclear Astrophysics. The fellowship is for one year, with a possibility of renewal for two additional years, contingent on performance and funding.
The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Prof. Moshe Friedman. She/he will be in charge of developing a detector for (n,p) reactions for studies of stellar nucleosynthesis. Position requirements include writing GEANT4 simulations, hands-on work, collaborating with colleagues from the Hebrew University and other institutes, guiding graduate students, performing nuclear physics measurements, analyzing experimental data, and publishing scientific results.
Several nucleosynthesis scenarios, such as the rp and νpp processes, involve important (n,p) and (n,α)) reactions on proton-rich isotopes. However, experimental data for most of the relevant isotopes hardly exists, as neutron sources at relevant energies are of limited intensity and detection of the reaction products is challenging. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to implement for the first time a new approach that will enable access to a whole family of currently inaccessible measurements.
The successful applicant must have received his/her PhD in physics within the last four years and have a record of publishing scientific results in the field of nuclear physics. Familiarity with ROOT and GEANT4 is expected.
